Benefits Of Barcode Systems In Automatic Identification

Automatic identification also known as Auto ID involves automatic recognition, decoding, processing, transmission and recording of data, usually by reading the information which is encoded in barcodes using barcode scanners. Barcodes provide quick, simple and precise reading and transmission of data for items which must be tracked or managed. Barcodes are printed promptly on mailing or stamping tubes, envelopes, boxes, cans, bottles, packages, books, files and other paperwork, furniture, cards and on several other articles for identification.

The development of Auto ID systems, involving barcodes and the associated printers, scanners, decoders and software, has greatly increased the speed, efficiency and accuracy of data collection and entry. In the beginning applications of barcode scanning, that included retail point-of-sale, item tracking and inventory control, have been extended to include more advanced applications like time and attendance, work-in-process, quality control, sorting, order entry, document tracking, shipping and receiving and supervising or regulating access to protected areas.

These extended systems have relatively increased productivity by attaching production, warehousing, distribution, sales and service to management information systems on a batch basis or real-time basis. Therefore, opportunities to boost operational efficiencies and customer responsiveness have advanced for retailers, transportation and package delivery companies, manufacturers, wholesale distributors and service providers.
