Dental crowns are nothing but caps that cover the tooth for restoration of its shape, size, strength and overall appearance. Discolored teeth, misshapened teeth and broken teeth can be treated by dental crowns. So, it is necessary that a durable dental crown is to be chosen to ensure the aesthetics to last long.

Dental crowns are made of different materials like porcelain, metal and porcelain fused metal. The metal ones are considered to be stronger and durable for a long time. People who suffer from allergies due to metal use of porcelain fused metal dental crowns which are also durable. However, they wear down the opposite teeth. Other models of dental crowns called as full resin dental crowns are inexpensive and can be prone to chips and cracks. Hence, it is necessary to choose the material of dental crowns based on their durable features.

It is said that a dental crown lasts between five and fifteen years. However, the durability also depends on several other factors. The general wear and tear to which the crown is exposed to varies its life. Various activities like chewing, biting, accidental trauma, tooth grinding and so on may affect the wear and tear of the dental crown made of any material. With the excessive wear and tear, the crown gets damaged soon decreasing its life span.

Even oral hygienic conditions can affect the durability of dental crowns. With regular and proper dental habits like flossing and brushing, no plaque gets deposited in the oral cavity. This makes the teeth free from any sort of bacteria. However, ineffective oral hygiene induces plaque formation that promotes various dental issues like decay and tooth loss. There are even chances of infection at the dental crown area reducing its durability.
