Care to be Taken After Root Canal Treatment

As you know, it is not good to neglect the root canal treatment. Though it is expensive and painful you have to undergo the treatment to prevent further damage to your teeth. You may feel relieved once you are done with the treatment. However, remember that you should take certain care and maintenance after undergoing the root canal treatment.
  • In order to relive the pain after the procedure, use certain over-the-counter drugs. Sometimes, the dentist also recommends a course of antibiotics to be used for certain period of time even after the treatment.
  • Place an ice pack over the area for minimizing the swelling. Make sure that you apply the ice pack for every 10 to 15 minutes till the swelling is reduced.
  • Do not chew from the side of your mouth that has faced the treatment which is still numb.
  • Rinse your mouth with salt water for 1-2 days to aid the healing process.
  • Ensure that you sleep in an elevated position for the first few days.
  • Take only soft food and avoid biting hard items. Do not take hard foods which fracture the tooth without crown.
  • Avoid smoking as it effects the healing process. Also, be away from alcoholic beverages and other unhealthy diet.
  • Do not take too hot or too cold food items during the healing process.
  • Also avoid any kind of strenuous exercises for 24 hours after the root canal treatment.

It is necessary that you follow these suggestions and take proper care after the treatment. Otherwise, the effort and value of the therapy may be lost if there are any possible damages in the tooth that has undergone the treatment.
